Just feet away from where NPR Music staffers write and edit stories, a swirl of black t-shirts and battle jackets opened up a small circle pit. The absurdity of the moment was not lost on us, but the smirks on the masses gathered to see an English metal band tear up NPR's office carpet kept the momentum appropriately (but respectfully) chaotic. Napalm Death's ongoing campaign for musical destruction had come to the Tiny Desk.

For more than 40 years, noise has not only been a central tenet of Napalm Death's caustic sound, but has also served as an ear-splitting advocacy for human dignity. In the 1980s, an early version of the band created grindcore, which amped up the intensity of metal and hardcore to make something far more extreme. In these songs, often short and always ferocious, the pain of oppression is reflected in the sonic assault, but the shrieks and growls remind us to choose love over hate.

So how do the founding fathers of grindcore sum up such a legacy, one that's still evolving? On both sides of this set, we get tracks from 1987 that still define the genre — let's call it a Scum sandwich. In between, Napalm Death speeds with manic energy across its sprawling catalog, including the dissonant death metal of "Everyday Pox" and the heaving post-punk of "Amoral," a song written by longtime bassist Shane Embury, who was unable to join the band for this U.S. tour. The set closes with a wink, but also a challenge: "You Suffer" can be written off as novelty, but in its one-second blast, there's a question worth asking every waking minute we spend in hopelessness: But why?

The night before he stopped by the Desk, Flea took a moment between songs at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C., to call his experience of performing with a jazz band "an adventure." After four decades as a founding member and bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea was touring on his debut solo album, Honora, in small venues, including the NPR Music office space.

Yes, that's Flea on trumpet, doubling up on bass and spitting poetry, but as he admits, "I'm just one part of this ensemble." That ensemble features Tiny Desk alumni Jeff Parker, Josh Johnson and Anna Butterss as well as Deantoni Parks — musicians with deep catalogs across creative music. "Working with the musicians that I've worked with has been the most exciting part," Flea told me afterward, "just jamming, connecting and feeling who they are."

KZ Tandingan - "Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako" Reaction | Music Video + Wish Bus Performance

My first time reacting to KZ Tandingan's "Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako", watching both the official Music Video and the incredible Wish Bus performance. redveil: Tiny Desk Concert

We love when a Tiny Desk feels like a homecoming. redveil, a rapper and producer from Prince George’s County, Md., moved to Los Angeles a couple years ago to further expand his musical ambitions. He comes back to the D.C. area, home of the Desk, with an evolved sound to perform a soulful set, turning his complex beats into jazzy, full-band arrangements.

In late 2025, redveil released sankofa, which means “go back and get it” from the Akan language of Ghana — to bring wisdom from the past into the future to make positive changes. That’s the mindset of this performance. He speaks on his mortality with “time (a dream deferred)” and, on “lone star,” reflects on summers in Texas with his grandparents. There’s a desire to connect with his Caribbean roots on “history,” which jumps right into the breezy love song “brown sugar.”

As he winds down the set, redveil goes back to “campbell,” the first track from his 2020 album niagra, which he released at age 16. To close out, redveil gets on the keys for “glimpse of you,” a personal letter to his brother who lives with schizophrenia — the song crescendos into an emotional climax and on a note of hope.
