Complex dropped their list of the Top 50 New York Rappers of All Time… and hip-hop fans have been arguing ever since.

From legends like Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, Rakim, and LL Cool J taking the top spots, to controversial rankings involving Jadakiss, Big L, Lloyd Banks, Ice Spice, and more, this list sparked one of the biggest rap debates online.

In this video, we break down Complex’s entire top 50 list, react to the biggest surprises, discuss the most shocking omissions, and debate which New York rappers were ranked way too high — or way too low.

Did Complex get the number one spot right?
Was Big L disrespected?
Should Lloyd Banks, AZ, or Canibus have made the list?
And which rapper has the most overrated placement?

Whether you’re a fan of golden age hip-hop, 90s rap, mixtape era legends, or the new generation of NYC artists, this video is packed with hip-hop history, opinions, and debate.

Drop your own top 10 New York rappers in the comments and let us know which placements you agree — or completely disagree — with.

JAŸ-Z Vs. LL Cool J - Beef Documentary [Queens Vs. Brooklyn's Finest]

JAY-Z Vs. LL Cool J Beef Documentary, New York's Finest (Queens Vs. Brooklyn)

The feud between LL Cool J and JAY-Z is one of hip-hop’s most underrated cold wars.

While it never exploded into a full-scale diss-track battle like some of rap’s most infamous beefs, the tension between these two New York legends lasted for years behind the scenes. From subliminal shots and interviews to Def Jam politics and questions about respect, this rivalry represented something much deeper than simple competition.

In this video, we break down the complete timeline of the LL Cool J vs. JAY-Z feud — from the rise of LL as one of hip-hop’s first superstars to JAY-Z’s takeover as the new king of New York rap. We’ll explore how generational conflict, industry politics, ego, and legacy all played major roles in the tension between these two icons.

As JAY-Z rose to dominance in the late 1990s and early 2000s with classic albums like “Reasonable Doubt,” “The Blueprint,” and “The Black Album,” many older rap legends felt the culture was moving on too quickly. Meanwhile, LL Cool J — one of the founding faces of Def Jam and one of the first rappers to achieve mainstream crossover success — reportedly felt that pioneers were no longer receiving proper respect from the new generation.

Things became even more complicated once JAY-Z became president of Def Jam, leading to rumors of behind-the-scenes friction involving promotion, label politics, and recognition. Although the feud never reached the level of Nas vs. JAY-Z or 2Pac vs. Biggie, the tension between LL and Jay reflected a major turning point in hip-hop history: the passing of the torch from one era to another.

This video covers:

The origins of the tension between LL Cool J and JAY-Z
Def Jam politics and behind-the-scenes issues
Subliminal disses and interview shots
The generational divide in hip-hop
JAY-Z’s rise to power in New York rap
LL Cool J’s frustrations with respect and legacy
How the feud eventually cooled down
The lasting impact both artists had on hip-hop culture

Whether you’re a longtime fan of classic hip-hop or just discovering rap history, this is a story about ego, respect, business, and the fight for the crown in one of the most competitive eras ever.

Who do YOU think had the greater impact on hip-hop:
LL Cool J or JAY-Z?

Hip-hop in the 1990s was built on competition, ego, respect, and legacy — and few debates are more interesting than the tension and comparisons between Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., and LL Cool J.

In this video, we take a deep dive into the history behind the rumored rivalry, competitive energy, and controversial moments involving three of the most influential names in hip-hop history. Before 2Pac and Biggie became the faces of the golden era of rap, LL Cool J had already established himself as one of the first true rap superstars — dominating the charts, crossing over into mainstream success, and helping turn hip-hop into a global movement.

But as the mid-90s arrived, a new generation was taking over.

2Pac brought unmatched passion, charisma, and emotion to rap music, while Biggie revolutionized lyricism and storytelling with his effortless flow and legendary delivery. As both artists rose to the top of the rap game, comparisons to LL Cool J became unavoidable. Fans, magazines, interviews, award shows, and even subliminal lyrics added fuel to the idea that there was tension between the old guard and the new kings of hip-hop.

In this documentary-style breakdown, we explore:

• The history of LL Cool J’s dominance before the rise of Pac & Biggie
• Comments and interviews that sparked controversy
• The competitive nature of 90s hip-hop
• Subliminal disses and rumored tension between the artists
• How 2Pac and Biggie viewed LL Cool J
• Whether the rivalry was real or exaggerated by the media
• The impact all three artists had on rap culture and hip-hop history
• Who truly had the biggest influence on the game

From New York to the West Coast, these artists helped shape one of the greatest eras in music history. Their influence can still be heard today in modern rap, and their legacies continue to inspire new generations of artists and fans around the world.

Hip-Hop has given the world some of the most influential artists in music history. From the pioneers who built the culture in the late 1970s and 1980s to the lyrical giants and chart-topping superstars who followed, rap has evolved into a global movement that continues to shape music, fashion, language, and culture.

What happens when you let the fans take control of the rankings?

In this video, I asked my community and friends one simple question: “Who are your top 10 favorite rappers of all time?” — and the results did NOT disappoint.

From legendary icons to modern superstars, this list is completely shaped by real hip-hop fans. No filters, no industry bias — just pure opinions from the people who live and breathe the culture. And as you’d expect… not everyone agrees.

Some picks are obvious. Some are surprising. And a few might have you questioning everything ????

We’re breaking down the most popular choices, counting down the community’s rankings, and highlighting which rappers showed up the most across everyone’s lists. Who takes the number one spot? You’ll have to watch until the end to find out.

This video is all about the culture, the debates, and the love for hip-hop — so make sure you join in

Why Nas' Friends KNOCKED OUT & ROBBED Mobb Deep's Prodigy [Sherm Da Worm & Lakey The Kid]

Mobb Deep Vs. Nas, How Mobb Deep’s Prodigy Got Knocked Out & Robbed by Nas’ Friends Lakey The Kid & Sherm The Worm - Hip-Hop Universe

Hip-hop history is filled with legendary rivalries, street politics, and moments that changed relationships forever. In this video, we break down the controversial story of how Prodigy of Mobb Deep was allegedly knocked out and robbed by associates of Nas — Lakey The Kid and Sherm The Worm.

At the height of the Queensbridge tension, Prodigy and Nas were not on good terms. What started as competitive energy between two elite lyricists turned into one of the most talked-about beefs in New York rap history. Diss records were exchanged, interviews fueled speculation, and the streets took notice.

But things reportedly escalated beyond music.

According to multiple accounts, Prodigy was confronted and assaulted by individuals connected to Nas’ circle. Rumors spread quickly throughout the hip-hop community, sparking debates about loyalty, street credibility, and how far rap rivalries should go. While details have varied over the years, the incident became a significant chapter in the ongoing tension between the camps.

In this video, we explore:

• The origins of the Nas vs. Mobb Deep tension
• The role of Queensbridge politics
• What allegedly happened the night Prodigy was confronted
• The involvement of Lakey The Kid & Sherm The Worm
• How the situation impacted Prodigy’s reputation
• The aftermath and eventual reconciliation between Nas and Prodigy

Years later, the two rap icons would eventually squash their differences. Nas even spoke respectfully about Prodigy following his passing in 2017, showing how time can heal even the deepest rifts.
The Tragic Life & Death Of DMX

The Tragic Life & Death Of DMX

Few artists embodied pain, passion, and raw authenticity like DMX. Born Earl Simmons, DMX wasn’t just a rapper — he was a voice for the broken, the abandoned, and the unheard. In this video, we take a deep dive into the rise, struggles, redemption attempts, and tragic passing of one of hip-hop’s most intense and influential figures.

Raised in Yonkers, New York, DMX endured a childhood filled with trauma, abuse, and instability. From being beaten as a child to spending time in group homes and juvenile detention centers, his early life shaped the raw emotion that would later define his music. Pain wasn’t something DMX performed — it was something he lived.

In the late 1990s, hip-hop witnessed something rare: a superstar who didn’t rely on flashy gimmicks or polished personas. DMX exploded onto the scene with his debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, a gritty masterpiece that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. He followed it up the same year with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, making him the first artist ever to release two No. 1 albums in the same calendar year.

Songs like “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” “Slippin’,” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” became cultural landmarks. His aggressive delivery, haunting prayers, and brutally honest confessions set him apart from everyone else. At a time when rap was becoming increasingly commercial, DMX brought the streets, the struggle, and spirituality to the forefront.

But behind the platinum plaques and sold-out arenas, DMX was battling deep personal demons. Addiction haunted him from a young age, and despite numerous attempts at rehab and recovery, it remained a constant struggle throughout his life. His legal troubles, arrests, and public controversies often overshadowed his musical accomplishments, yet fans remained loyal because they saw his humanity. He never pretended to be perfect — he openly wrestled with his flaws.

In this video, we explore:

• DMX’s traumatic childhood and early years
• His breakthrough in the late ‘90s rap scene
• The success of his first five consecutive No. 1 albums
• His acting career in films like Belly, Romeo Must Die, and Cradle 2 the Grave
• His battle with addiction and legal issues
• His spiritual journey and public prayers
• The tragic events leading to his hospitalization in 2021
• The impact of his death on hip-hop and beyond

In April 2021, the world was shaken by the news that DMX had suffered a drug overdose that led to cardiac arrest. After days in critical condition, he passed away at just 50 years old. Tributes poured in from artists, fans, and public figures across the globe. The streets of Yonkers filled with memorials, prayer circles, and candlelight vigils — proof that DMX wasn’t just a celebrity, he was a symbol of survival and vulnerability.

More than anything, DMX represented honesty. He showed that strength and brokenness can coexist. His music gave comfort to millions who felt lost, angry, or alone. Even in his darkest moments, he spoke about faith, redemption, and hope.

His legacy lives on through his music, his children, and the countless artists he inspired. DMX didn’t just rap about struggle — he let the world see it in real time.

This is the story of triumph, pain, faith, addiction, resilience, and tragedy.

If you appreciate deep-dive hip-hop documentaries that tell the full story — not just the headlines — make sure to like, comment, and subscribe for more.

Rest in peace, DMX. The dog will always bark.

The Nas vs. Mobb Deep rivalry is one of the coldest, most lyrical feuds in hip-hop history. Born in the gritty streets of Queensbridge, this clash wasn’t just about diss records — it was about pride, credibility, and who truly represented the raw reality of New York rap.

In this documentary, we break down the full timeline of the Nas vs. Mobb Deep rap feud, from the early tension to the unforgettable diss tracks that shook the culture. We explore how Nas, already crowned as one of the greatest lyricists of all time, found himself targeted by Mobb Deep’s dark, uncompromising street narratives led by Prodigy and Havoc. What started as subtle jabs soon turned into all-out lyrical warfare.

You’ll hear the story behind Mobb Deep’s “Drop a Gem on ’Em” and Nas’ legendary response “Destroy and Rebuild,” a track many fans consider one of the most surgical diss records ever made. We analyze the bars, the subliminals, and the real-life tension that fueled the beef, while placing it in the wider context of the late-90s East Coast hip-hop scene.

This video also dives into the Queensbridge connection, showing how both Nas and Mobb Deep came from the same environment yet represented two very different perspectives of the streets. We discuss how ego, reputation, and competition pushed this feud forward — and how the rivalry ultimately led to respect and reconciliation years later.

Whether you’re a longtime hip-hop head or a new fan discovering rap history, this documentary gives you a clear, detailed look at one of rap’s most underrated beefs. No exaggeration, no clickbait — just facts, music, and cultural context.

Tupac vs. The Notorious B.I.G. – The Heartbreaking Beef That Ended in Tragedy

The beef between Tupac Shakur (aka 2Pac) and Christopher Wallace (aka The Notorious B.I.G.) is one of the most infamous and tragic feuds. The conflict between these two iconic artists not only defined an era in rap music but ultimately led to their untimely deaths.

Tupac and Biggie started their careers as friends and collaborators. The two first crossed paths in the early 1990s, bonding over their love for music and shared experiences growing up in the tough neighborhoods of New York City and Los Angeles. However, as their careers progressed, tension began to mount.

The seeds of the Tupac and Biggie beef can be traced back to an infamous incident in 1994, when Tupac was robbed and shot multiple times in a New York City recording studio. Tupac believed that members of Biggie’s Bad Boy Records were involved, leading him to suspect betrayal from his former ally. This incident marked a turning point in their relationship, escalating their conflict from simmering tension to an all-out feud.

The beef between Tupac and Biggie wasn’t just confined to behind-the-scenes drama. Tupac’s scathing disses on tracks like “Hit ‘Em Up” and “Against All Odds” accused Biggie and his associates of being responsible for his attack and labeled them as traitors.
The rivalry extended beyond their music. Both artists engaged in a war of words during interviews and press conferences, with insults and accusations flying back and forth. The media circus surrounding their feud only amplified the tension and contributed to the escalating animosity between Tupac and Biggie.

During the height of The Notorious B.I.G.‘s beef with Tupac, many incidents transpired that have since been well documented. However, Lil Cease recently revealed a few things most hadn’t previously known from that hostile era, including details regarding an unreleased Tupac diss titled “The Ugliest” which he recorded after 2Pac's death & after his car accident in September 1996.

The Art of Dialogue released an interview with Cease in which he spoke on the J Dilla-produced track. “Big wasn’t really tryna do diss songs to Pac,” the former Junior M.A.F.I.A. member explained. “I mean, he was making it aware. Little lines he may say in certain songs and situations like that […] but Big wasn’t gonna put forth a full effort into a whole full song dissing Tupac.” Cease also clarified that Pac was never name-dropped on the song, even though the lyrics clearly allude to the West Coast rapper.

Following the tension’s peak with Pac’s 1996 B-side, “Hit Em Up,” Cease confirmed “The Ugliest” was supposed to feature Biggie, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Method Man. The track was initially set to appear on Busta’s debut during album that same year. However, it was ultimately shelved by the Busta himself.

Biggie responded with tracks like “Who Shot Ya?” and “Long Kiss Goodnight,” fueling the fire of the feud.

The rivalry extended beyond their music. Both artists engaged in a war of words during interviews and press conferences, with insults and accusations flying back and forth. The media circus surrounding their feud only amplified the tension and contributed to the escalating animosity between Tupac and Biggie.

One of Biggie’s tracks that contains the most shots at Tupac, even though his name is never actually spoken. This is the closest thing we have to a 2Pac diss by Biggie and it’s mainly in response to 2Pac’s “Hit ‘Em Up”, in which 2Pac called out Biggie

The title is inspired by the 1996 action vehicle The Long Kiss Goodnight. It is worth mentioning that this movie inspired Biggie to give his then girlfriend, Tiffany Lane, her stage name “Charli Baltimore” taken from Geena Davis’s character in the film The Long Kiss Goodnight.

If this was really about 2Pac, it appears this was written after 2Pac’s death! Big references his car accident with Lil Cease twice in this song, and Big said in an interview that that car accident happened 3 days after Pac died. Big also raps about it being a “new year,” by which he presumably meant 1997. Pac passed away on September 13, 1996. Last, the title and theme of the song is “Long Kiss Goodnight,” which comes from the film The Long Kiss Goodnight, which came out October 11, 1996, a month after Pac’s death.

Lil Cease said it was about Pac. Then Puff said it wasn’t. Then Cease said it wasn’t.

This song samples Al Green’s “The Letter.” However, It is no coincidence that the beat is drastically similar to the beat from Capone-N-Noreaga’s “L.A., L.A.”, a track which served as the response to The Dogg Pound “New York, New York.” The latter track was seen as an act of disrespect to the city of New-York; having Snoop Dogg kicking down buildings in New York godzilla-style in it’s music video. The music video cinematics is something that both the Dogg Pound and Snoop would attribute as a response to Biggie calling up a radio station that led to the shooting of their trailer while they were filming for the music video in New York.

Amidst the peak of the East-coast Vs West-coast rap beef, Biggie was in no place to jump on “L.A, L.A.”, but later, using this similar beat for a track diss the West-coast rap icon 2Pac, was much like his late collaboration to the whole ordeal when he thought the time was suitable.
Tupac vs. The Notorious B.I.G. – The Heartbreaking Beef That Ended in Tragedy

The beef between Tupac Shakur (aka 2Pac) and Christopher Wallace (aka The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie) is one of the most infamous and tragic feuds. The conflict between these two iconic artists not only defined an era in rap music but ultimately led to their untimely deaths. Let’s delve into the breakdown of the Tupac and Biggie beef, examining its roots, escalation, and lasting impact on the hip-hop community.

It played out publicly in their music and interviews, with both artists releasing diss tracks aimed at each other. Tupac’s scathing disses on tracks like “Hit ‘Em Up” and “Against All Odds” accused Biggie and his associates of being responsible for his attack and labeled them as traitors. Biggie responded with tracks like “Who Shot Ya?” and “Long Kiss Goodnight,” fueling the fire of the feud.

"Who Shot Ya?" is a song by American rapper the Notorious B.I.G., backed by Sean Combs. Bad Boy Entertainment released it on February 21, 1995, on an alternate reissue of Wallace's single "Big Poppa/Warning". Its new B-side "Who Shot Ya", a revision of a track already issued earlier in 1995, was "controversial and hugely influential." Widely interpreted as a taunt at Tupac Shakur, the single provoked a "rap battle" between the two rappers, formerly friends.

Wallace, when interviewed, explained his "Who Shot Ya" lyrics as simply portraying a rivalry between drug dealers. The instrumental is a sample that loops a portion of soul singer David Porter's 1971 song "I'm Afraid the Masquerade Is Over", from the album Victim of the Joke? An Opera. The song supposedly references Shakur's 1994 non-fatal shooting, which Shakur had suspected Wallace of being involved with. Wallace disputed Shakur's portrayal, and called the rumors blaming him "crazy" in the track's lyrics. Out of prison, Tupac answered in June 1996 by the B side "Hit 'Em Up"—accusing Wallace by name—a "diss track" which inflamed the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry to its peak. Associates of Wallace who witnessed his "Who Shot Ya" recording have unanimously disputed that it targeted Shakur.

The rivalry extended beyond their music. Both artists engaged in a war of words during interviews and press conferences, with insults and accusations flying back and forth. The media circus surrounding their feud only amplified the tension and contributed to the escalating animosity between Tupac and Biggie.
The beef between Tupac and Biggie wasn’t just confined to behind-the-scenes drama.

"Hit 'Em Up" is a diss track by American rapper 2Pac, featuring the Outlawz. It is the B-side to the single "How Do U Want It", released on June 4, 1996. The song's lyrics contain vicious insults to several East Coast rappers, chiefly Shakur's former friend turned rival, the Notorious B.I.G. (also referred to colloquially as Biggie Smalls). The song was recorded at Can Am Studios on April 19, 1996. A previous version of the song was recorded on October 31, 1995.

Reporter Chuck Philips, who interviewed Shakur at Can Am, described the song as "an caustic anti–East Coast attack in which the rapper threatens to eliminate Biggie, Puffy, and a slew of Bad Boy artists and other New York acts". The song was produced by long-time collaborator Johnny "J". The video, itself described as infamous, includes impersonations of Biggie, Puffy and Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil' Kim.

"Hit 'Em Up" had a large role in exacerbating the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry. Following its release, the East Coast rappers insulted in the song responded through tracks of their own. The controversy surrounding the song is due in part to Shakur's murder in a drive-by-shooting only three months after its release. The song is widely regarded as among the greatest diss tracks ever recorded.[

The story of Big Pun (Christopher Rios) is one of hip hop’s most powerful yet heartbreaking tales. Known for his incredible lyricism, rapid-fire flow, and larger-than-life presence, Big Pun became the first Latino rapper to ever go platinum, forever changing the culture of hip hop. But while his success made history, behind the fame was a man struggling with personal demons, health battles, and family turmoil that ultimately led to his tragic death in 2000 at just 28 years old.

In this video, we uncover the truth behind Big Pun’s life and death. From his roots in the Bronx, his discovery by Fat Joe, and the creation of his legendary debut album Capital Punishment, to his struggles with obesity, depression, and pressure from fame — this is the full untold story of Big Pun.

What you’ll learn in this video:

How Big Pun rose from the Bronx to become a hip hop icon.

The making and impact of Capital Punishment, one of the greatest rap albums of the 1990s.

His complicated friendship and partnership with Fat Joe.

The health problems and weight gain that put his life at risk.

The shocking and tragic events leading to his passing in February 2000.

The legacy Big Pun left behind and how he inspired a generation of Latino rappers and hip hop artists worldwide.

Big Punisher’s life is both a celebration of lyrical genius and a cautionary tale about the dangers of fame, excess, and neglecting health. Though gone too soon, Big Pun’s influence on hip hop remains unmatched, and his music continues to inspire fans across the globe.
