Grizzly Bear discuss their new album, Painted Ruins.

Make a list of key bands from the Brooklyn alt-indie explosion of the 2000s and Grizzly Bear would right up there. The intrepid foursome have been refining their experimental mélange of folk, pop and prog ideas since arriving on the scene with ‘Horn of Plenty’ back in ’04. Edward Droste, Daniel Rossen, Chris Taylor and Christopher Bear have always concocted a unique sound together, and by the time of ‘09’s ‘Veckatimest’ and its surreal “Two Weeks” video, the band’s always-evocative music was impressing a much larger audience than that of their Brooklyn cohort. After a five-year hiatus, the band returns with the multi-layered ‘Painted Ruins.’ We invited Droste and Rossen in for a chat that veered from the “lazer tits” and “slapping buttocks” in their “Mourning Sound” video to the process of navigating each other’s personalities. And they landed on a favorite album, too. Gotta see what they say about Liz Phair’s ‘Exile In Guyville.’
