When The Roots drummer and film director Ahmir Thompson, better known as Questlove, began shooting his documentary on pop star Sly Stone, he sensed something more than making a movie was taking place. “As I’m dissecting Sly’s life story and success, I also started my own parallel journey,” he tells Amplify host Lara Downes. And that journey was not always easy, even after winning an Academy Award. “Maybe seven or eight months later, I was actually praying for it to all stop,” he says. “Because there’s a level of guilt you feel every time you get an accolade.” Lara and Questlove discuss the pitfalls of fame and how documenting America’s music tells us a lot about our history.
